Military Tour Rijeka – Liberation Monument and the history of the city center border

At the very mouth of the Rječina, in the center of Rijeka, where everyday life meets deep historical layers, stands the Liberation Monument – the starting point of our military history tour through Rijeka.

This is not just an urban location, but one of the most important historical areas in the city. It was here that the former state border in the center of Rijeka once ran, dividing two cities and two systems – Rijeka and Sušak. Today, it is a unique space where the city’s layered history is still visible in the landscape itself.

On one side lies the Mrtvi kanal, once a vital port and industrial zone of the city. On the other side flows the Rječina, a river that continues to define Rijeka’s geography and identity. Between them spreads the Delta Rijeke – an area that has constantly changed over time, from a natural river delta to a highly strategic urban zone.

From this point, the view opens toward the Kvarner Bay, highlighting Rijeka’s long-standing importance as a port and border city throughout history.
