The City of Rijeka
The city of Rijeka lies at the delta of the river Rječina, at the base of a mountain barrier. Rijeka developed where the Adriatic Sea deeply embedded itself into the European mainland, creating the shortest sea connection between Central and Eastern Europe and overseas nations.
Due to its geostrategic position, Rijeka has been a focal point in political maneuvers throughout history. During the turbulent 20th century, the citizens of Rijeka found themselves under the jurisdiction of nine different states:
- 1868 to 1918 – Austro-Hungarian Monarchy
- 1918 – State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs
- 1920 – Italian Regency of Kvarner
- 1920-1924 – Free State of Rijeka
- 1924-1943 – Kingdom of Italy
- 1918-1941 – Kingdom of S.H.S.
- 1943-1945 – Third Reich
- 1945-1990 – the “new” Yugoslavia and the Republic of Croatia
